Weekly Markets have been around in Hamburg for over 500 years. Even in 1583 there were already five major reoccurring markets in the town. Today the official website of the city lists 76 weekly or farmers markets, 11 of them falling into the “eco”-category, where only regional produce is sold.

It’s hard to choose from a selection this big. So we took it upon ourselves to find the best weekly or farmers market in Hamburg, so that you know where to go when you’re in the city! Here is our list of the top 6 markets in Hamburg you don’t want to miss…

NR. 1: “MARKTZEIT” (IN THE DISTRICTS OF “SCHANZE” AND “KAROLINENVIERTEL”)

Opening hours and addresses:

September to April on every saturday from 9:30am to 3pm) in the “Fabrik” at Barnerstraße 36 in 22765 Hamburg

and May to August on every Saturday (10am to 6pm) in front of the “Rindermarkthalle”, at Neuer Kamp 31, 20359 Hamburg

In New York and other major cities they are called “Neighboorhood Markets”. A place where you not only do your weekly shopping, but also get together with friends, neighbors and other people to enjoy the start of the weekend with a hot coffee, cold beer or a nice glass of wine. In Hamburg this is called “Marktzeit”.

This Saturday is the last installment of the “Marktzeit” summer series, which is held in front of the “Rindermarkthalle” close to the subway station “Feldstraße”. There you can find flower stands next to stalls led by artists who sell carved woods and local retailers from the trendy district “Schanzenviertel”. Food to go is supplied by high-quality food trucks, that are chosen from a large selection. Therefore “Marktzeit” offers a different fast-food-experience each week. “Beer tasting” is also on offer with many craft-beer-producers trying to find new customers.

Due to the short distances to the districts “Schanzenviertel” and “St. Pauli” the “Marktzeit” is a good meeting point before heading to the many bars and clubs on and around the party zone of the Reeperbahn. If you’re using public transport to get there your best choice is the stop “Feldstraße”, which can be reached via train (Line: U3) or Bus (Line: M4).

NR. 2: “ISEMARKT” (WEEKLY MARKET IN THE DISTRICT OF “EPPENDORF – HOHELUFT”)

from 8:30am to 2pmThe organizers of the “Isemarkt” claim that their weekly market is the most beloved in the whole city. Its hard to tell whether this is true, but it is surely one of the highly frequented markets in Hamburg. The atmosphere is very special due to its location beneath the train bridge that connects the two stops at “Hoheluftbrücke” and “Eppendorfer Baum”. Hundreds of stands offer everything from fresh produce to clothing, antiques and old records.

Because of the many public transport connections it is easy to reach. Parking spots are hard to get though. Many other shops and retailers in the surrounding area of the “Hoheluft”- district offer a wide range of goods that invite you to take another stroll through the area.

NR. 3: “ST. PAULI NACHTMARKT” (IN THE DISTRICT OF “ST. PAULI” RIGHT ON THE “REEPERBAHN”)

The “St. Pauli Nachtmarkt” is like the Reeperbahn – different and a little grungy. However, it therefore offers things you won’t get at other weekly markets in Hamburg. For example, besides the general grocery- and fast-food-stands it also provides its visitors with Live-Performances by various acts. Especially by local bands and singers.

Many Bars, Clubs and other establishments offer visitors many options to continue the evening around the famous red light district of the city. NR. 4: WEEKLY MARKET AT “WANDSBEKER MARKTPLATZ” (IN THE DISTRICT OF “WANDSBEK”)

Monday to Saturday: 8:30am to 1pm

One of the oldest markets in Hamburg is coming in at number 4. According to their own accounts the market at “Wandsbeker Marktplatz” exists since 1861. It might look a little domestic and traditional at first, but in comparison to other weekly markets it offers its visitors an atmosphere that is truly “Hamburgian” due to its location off the city centre. The organizers have also produced a Website, which offers a list of the participating retailers.

The weekly market at “Wandsbeker Marktplatz” is also one of the only two markets in Hamburg that are open to visit nearly every day (except Sundays).The weekly market in Harburg being the other. Stands are open from Monday to Saturday starting in the early hours of the morning right up to midday.

NR. 5: WEEKLY MARKET AT “TURMWEG” (IN THE DISTRICT OF “HARVESTEHUDE”)

Thursdays: 8:30am to 2pm

For over 50 years the locals of “Harvestehude” and its neighboring districts are coming together every Thursday to roam around the market at “Turmweg”. On those days the square in front of St. Johans Church turns into a hot spot for antique dealers and smaller clothing outlets, which brings a sort flea market feel to the whole event. A nice break from your normal grocery shopping round with sweet surprises for natives and tourists.

NR. 6: WEEKLY MARKET AT “SPRITZENPLATZ” (IN THE DISTRICTS OF “ALTONA/ OTTENSEN”)

A smaller weekly market in the district “Altona” is perfect for strolling through the area. The major train station “Altona” is very close by, which offers many public transport options that get you there and back home. Especially if your bags are full of fresh fruits and other produce, this is a helpful feature.

The multi-cultural influences show up very clearly and offer a huge selection of “Delicatessen” that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Many Cafés in the surrounding streets of Altona and Ottensen are perfect for a quick refreshment and for improving the general mood around the market.
